About SAAS

Social Accountability Accreditation Services (SAAS) is an accreditation agency that evaluates, accredits, and monitors organizations that demonstrate competency to audit and certify organizations that conform to social standards.  Our vision is a world where all people across the globe enjoy fair and safe workplaces.

Through the accredited certification system, SAAS promotes human rights in the workplace by providing a quality assurance framework, linking social standards and codes of conduct to auditing bodies, individual companies and stakeholders concerned about labor conditions.  This framework provides credibility to the audit systems designed to asses ethical workplace conditions and improve the lives of workers throughout global supply chains.  

SAAS is the only global accreditation body whose mission is to support implementation of social and labor standards – this is accomplished through oversight and evaluation services designed  to assess the competency of auditing systems and individual auditors. 

How We Got Started

SAAS began work in 1997 as an independent accreditation department within Social Accountability International (SAI).  

In 1998, SAAS began accrediting Certification Bodies to perform audits that certify qualifying organizations to the SA8000 Standard.  In the structure of management systems accredited certification, there must be systems in place to control processes and to show that performance is compliant with those requirements.  The idea that a system must include objective verification and evaluation for competence to perform their task was at the core of developing an accreditation and oversight system.

Since its inception, SAAS has worked with multiple clients, including current oversight activities for auditing bodies to audit against the ABVTEX program.  Additionally, SAAS has implemented and monitored audits for the InterAction PVO standard, the BSCI verification code, development of the Magen Tzedek program, accreditation of the GoodWeave International system, and oversight and monitoring of the organizations delivering SA8000 Training.   

Our Activities

SAAS activities support the improvement of workplace environments through implementation of social responsibility, accountability and transparency in businesses and organizations.  SAAS evaluates auditing organizations to assure they are qualified to hold their clients accountable to social standards. 

With more than 15 years of experience in the field of social systems and certification, SAAS is a proven leader in quality assurance.  SAAS manages its accreditation and related activities through a series of internal process and procedures in compliance with requirements found in ISO/IEC 17011, an international standard outlining the general requirements for accreditation bodies.  In 2009, SAAS became a full member of the ISEAL Alliance, a demonstration of its leadership in the field of international social and environmental accreditation.  As part of its reorganized structure, as of 2018, SAAS no longer maintained its own membership in ISEAL and may, going forward, be a member as part of SAI.
